THE ROLE OF GOAL SETTING AND GOAL PROXIMITY IN TREATING ADDICTION

A comprehensive plan for recovery will often require setting goals. This may include goals around moderation criteria, improving physical health, attending educational and support groups, attaining a new job or housing, and systematically working through relationship dynamics. One key ingredient to goal setting, which is often overlooked, is goal proximity. This simply means how near or far the end-goal is from the present point in time.

The trick of goal setting in addiction treatment is to break down overarching objectives like “getting sober” into smaller steps that are less overwhelming for patients. Similar to employee performance management and personal-development objectives, addiction recovery goals should use SMART criteria: they should be Specific, Measurable, Agreed, Realistic, and Time-based. If goals are too ambitious, the fear of failure can all too quickly rear its ugly head and cause problems. If there is no time limit, patients won’t know when they have achieved them.

Goal Setting For Yourself During Recovery

Each person’s recovery is as individual as they’re. There is no “one size fits all” approach that works for everyone. That is as it should be. No one else has your unique background, history of use, or reasons for using drugs or alcohol. It doesn’t make sense for your treatment program to look like anyone else’s. The goals you set for yourself during recovery will also be unique.

The Benefits of Goals in Recovery

They require self-examination

In order to set goals for yourself in recovery, you must take the time to reflect on the things that are most important to you. How would you like to spend your time?

They require positive thinking

Successful goal setting means that you’ll have to put your attention into what you want, as opposed to what you don’t want. You can’t set a goal to “stop drinking” or “stop using drugs,” since these are negative concepts. You can set, however, a goal to keep your recovery intact for today, and then re-set it tomorrow.

They help to shift your personal mindset

Chances are, it’s been a long time since you thought about anything to do with yourself in a positive way. If this is the case, setting goals is will be a good exercise for you. It will help change your view of yourself into a capable, stronger, more competent person.
